Arsenal and Liverpool willing to gamble on crocked defender

Arsenal and Liverpool willing to gamble on crocked defender

Phil Jones is on borrowed time at Manchester United and that’s not lost on Arsenal or Liverpool it would seem. Jones, whose Old Trafford career has been endangered for some time now, is back on the physio table once again and according to The Sun this latest injury setback has broken United’s patience with a player who earns 110k per week.

Jose Mourinho will now sanction the utility man’s sale in January say the same source, with the Red Devils valuing him at around £10m. That would be a loss of £6.5m on what United forked out for Jones in June 2011 when Sir Alex Ferguson was hailing the arrival of a future Red Devils great.

It’s no surprise that United are now giving up the ghost on the 24-year-old though, whose reputation has crumbled thanks to absences though injury. He has only made 104 Premier League appearances in five full seasons, and none in 2016/17. However, if his fitness can somehow be maintained then Jones remains a player with huge unfulfilled potential and it’s not the first time the Gunners in particular have been linked to a swoop.

Indeed, an Emirates switch seems more plausible than Jones swapping the red of Manchester for the red of Liverpool, given the rarity of transfers between the two arch enemies. There have only been nine official player transfers between England’s most successful clubs and Phil Chisnall was the last of those in 1964.

Arsenal did sign two defenders in the summer transfer window, in the shape of Bolton’s Rob Holding and Shkodran Mustafi of Valencia, so it remains to be seen whether a gap opens up in Arsene Wenger’s squad. Considering Jones’ versatility, the 2012/13 Premier League winner might still be an attractive cover option to a number of top clubs.
