Great Football Betting Fun for Spain and England
And a bad couple of days for Germany. You can’t often say that! But while the Spanish and English clubs each won three Champions League football games this week, the Germans drew a blank. Betting odds, as well as common sense, tell us that at least Bayern Munich will be there at the business end of the competition. But they couldn’t match Atletico, and Monchengladbach too fell to Spanish opposition. Meanwhile, Arsenal, Spurs and Leicester City all bagged three crucial points.
Group A
Arsenal 2-0 Basel
A first half brace from Theo Walcott was enough to win this for the Gunners who are handily placed, level on points with PSG and having already played in Paris. It looks like those two for qualification as Basel were totally dominated at the Emirates.
Ludogorets 1-3 PSG
Edinson Cavani’s second half double strike was enough to take this away from Ludogorets after the home side took an early lead from a Natanael Pimienta free kick. They held out until almost half time when Blaise Matuidi equalised to set the second half pattern.
Group B
Napoli 4-2 Benfica
Napoli have gone four points clear at the top of Group B and look likely to be the first to qualify. Dries Mertens scored twice, including a beautiful free kick as the Italians went four up within the hour. Goncalo Guedes and Eduardo Salvio made it respectable.
Besiktas 1-1 Dynamo Kiev
These two are both winless, but second place in Group B is up for grabs. Besiktas led for a good chunk of the game after going ahead through Ricardo Quaresma on 28 minutes. But Viktor Tsygankov smashed home the equaliser mid way through the second half to grab a point.
Group C
Monchengladbach 1-2 Barcelona
Barca recovered from a first half deficit to win a tough game at Borussia Park and to top group C. Thorgan Hazard had put the Germans in front but a clever reply from Arda Turan opened the door for defender Gerard Pique to poke home the winner.
Celtic 3-3 Manchester City
Maybe the English clubs should cast an eye north to see how to stop City. Moussa Dembele gave Celtic a shock early lead which was quickly cancelled out by Fernandinho. Raheem Sterling thought he’d give the Scots a chance when he put through his own goal, then had second thoughts and scored brilliantly at the right end. Dembele put Celtic in front again before Nolito made it 3-3 on 57 minutes, but the home team held out to register their first point.
Group D
Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayern Munich
Yannick Carrasco struck in the first half to win a hugely meaningful game in a hard fought 90 minutes at the Vicente Calderon. The three points take Atletico to the top of Group D and deliver a psychological blow to a big rival. Carrasco has a habit of scoring in big Champions League games, his last being in the 2016 final.
FC Rostov 2-2 PSV Eindhoven
After an entertaining four-goal first half the second produced a nil-nil; but PSV should have won this. Luuk de Jong made it 2-2 after Dmitriy Poloz’ double strike put Rostov in charge. PSV’s Davy Propper should have added to his first half goal, hitting the bar and missing a penalty.
Group E
Monaco 1-1 Bayer Leverkusen
A spectacular 94th minute strike from Kamil Glik saved a point for Monaco to keep them top of the table after Manchester United cast-off Chicharito headed Leverkusen in front.
CSKA Moscow 0-1 Spurs
Spurs are back on track and move into second after Heung-Min Son added to his weekend domestic double with a second half strike to earn a crucial away win. No Harry Kane may not be such a worry. CSKA are bottom.
Group F
Borussia Dortmund 2-2 Real Madrid
Los Blancos stuttering run continues but this was a fantastic game, with Cristiano Ronaldo shrugging off his weekend substitution with an early goal, but Andre Schurrle set the stadium alight with a late thunderbolt.
Sporting Lisbon 2-0 Legia Warsaw
Goals from former Fulham hit man, Costa Rican Bryan Ruiz and Bas Dost were enough to consign Legia to another defeat while keeping the Portuguese in touch of the top two.
Group G
Leicester City 1-0 Porto
The Foxes are taking to the Champions League like a duck to water. Okay, they haven’t faced a frightening side yet, but you can only beat what’s in front of you; and they did that again thanks to Islam Slimani scoring his sixth of the season
FC Copenhagen 4-0 Club Brugge
Brugge followed up a 3-0 home defeat to Leicester with another thrashing in wonderful, wonderful (not for Belgium maybe) Copenhagen. Centre Back Mathias Jorgensen thumped home a 92nd minute header to finish off the poor visitors.
Group H
Dinamo Zagreb 0-4 Juventus
Juventus blew Zagreb apart with goals from Miralem Pjanic, Gonzalo Higuain, Paulo Dybala and Dani Alves. That’s some potent strike force and puts Juve in charge after two games.
Sevilla 1-0 Lyon
And the Old Lady is joined on four points by Jorge Sampaoli’s Sevilla who saw off Lyon thanks to a second half header by Wissam Ben Yedder. Lyon will still believe they can escape the group though.
