Who are the Norwich City twins taking the Championship by storm?

Who are the Norwich City twins taking the Championship by storm?

Norwich City have been in outstanding form of late, notching up five consecutive wins in all competitions. And while many punters fancied Newcastle and Aston Villa to be the frontrunners in this year’s Championship before a ball was kicked, it’s the Canaries who have caught the eye so far this term.

Manager Alex Neil added five new names to his roster during the summer transfer window, but it’s the return of loanees Josh and Jacob Murphy that have excited fans most. The 21-year-old twins are both products of City’s youth academy, and having spent the last few years out on loan, the pair are finally establishing themselves amongst Neil’s first-team. But what else do we know about the brothers who’ve attracted interest from a host of Premier League clubs in recent weeks?

Josh Murphy

Already with 27 league appearances to his name for the Canaries, forward Josh Murphy made his first-team debut aged just 18, coming on as a substitute in a 7-0 defeat away at Manchester City in the Premier League. Not the best start to his professional career. However, he then went on to feature for Norwich a further eight times in that campaign, and scored his first senior goal the following season in a 3-1 win away at Blackpool before being loaned out to Wigan Athletic to earn game time. And it was after another loan deal last term that Neil decided Josh was ready to stake a claim for a starting berth at his parent club.

While Norwich suffered relegation from the Premier League in 2015-16, one half of their talented duo was busy strutting his stuff for Milton Keynes Dons in the Championship. Murphy represented the Dons 46 times in all competitions, scoring seven goals and making 10 assists. Clearly a success in this league and a threat to every defence he came up against, it was inevitable that Josh would be staying with the Canaries this year. He’s already featured for his side on eight occasions this season, scoring four goals and assisting the same amount in all competitions. It’s no surprise that teams in the top-flight are watching him every week.

Jacob Murphy

Though he’s only represented his current club in seven league games, he certainly has enough experience in the EFL. At the tender age of just 21, Jacob Murphy has already played in three of England’s top four tiers, and he’s stood out wherever he’s been.

It all began back in the 2013-14 campaign, where Jacob split his time between Swindon Town in League One and Southend United in League Two. The following season Jacob was plying his trade at three different sides, although none of them were his parent club. He spent two months at Blackpool before dropping down a division where he played for Colchester United after representing Scunthorpe United on three occasions. Throughout the course of that campaign, Murphy registered six goals and as many assists in all competitions.

While his brother was impressing in the Championship last campaign, Jacob was equally as influential in League One, where he notched up nine goals and 10 assists from midfield for a Coventry City side that narrowly missed out on a play-off spot. Between them this year, Josh and Jacob have nine goals and four assists to their name, and they have a chance to add to that tally tonight as Norwich head to fellow title-challengers Newcastle United.

The away side are 5/2 to take all three points from this one, while it’s 9/1 for Jacob Murphy to net the first goal. So can Neil keep hold of two of his most prized assets for years to come? Perhaps much of that will depend on whether or not the Canaries make an instant return to the Premier League.
