Four away goals and Atletico surely have one foot in the quarter-final, although it wasn’t until Fernando Torres nodded in a late fourth that the outcome of this first leg was known.At half-time, it all seemed plain sailing as Atletico picked up from where they left off in La Liga at the weekend. Saul Niguez and Antoine Griezmann struck and the hosts were fortunate to be only two behind at the break.

Yet the Germans hit back twice, either side of a Kevin Gameiro penalty, to keep the tie alive before Torres’ intervention. It could have been 3-3 by then as Roger Schmidt’s side showed spirit. They took Los Rojiblancos to a penalty shoot-out when they met at this stage two seasons ago.

A repeat scenario is now unlikely.
