Why now is the time to get on Joshua or Murray for 2017 SPOTY glory

Why now is the time to get on Joshua or Murray for 2017 SPOTY glory

With no Olympics taking place this summer, plus a late Ashes series which will run into 2018 and a close season without a World Cup or European Championships tournament, the door is wide open for a whole host of sporting greats to get their hands on the 2017 Sports Personality of the Year trophy.

And while it’s very early days, the value for some of the frontrunners will likely only fall in the coming months – meaning now is the time to get behind one of the current frontrunners.

Of course, Andy Murray (5/1) will always be there or thereabout in this market. As we’ve seen on three occasions in the last four years, one big win in a year all but guarantees him this trophy. And as has happened on four occasions since this prestigious award was first handed out, a Wimbledon triumph wins you the trophy.

The Scot is currently 2/1 to win Wimbledon outright. If you think he’ll do just that, you’d get more than double those odds by backing him to win his fourth SPOTY award. And as we saw last year, as soon as Murray claimed the famous SW19 trophy, his SPOTY odds came crashing down. Our advice? Back him now, as he’ll only get shorter…

But our traders have made Anthony Joshua the early 5/2 favourite in this market, and here’s why… The former Olympic Gold medallist will face his toughest test yet in the ring next month, when he meets Wladimir Klitschko.

Granted, he’ll head into the ring as favourite to defeat the veteran fighter – but doing so would really be laying down a marker. AJ is the future of heavyweight boxing, and potentially the future of the sport as a whole. At least, that’s what we’re made to believe. And victory over Klitschko would set him up for another huge bout later on in the year. Though his potential opponent remains unknown, such a clash would likely fall just before SPOTY, meaning he’d be fresh in the minds of voters.

And perhaps that’s what our traders are thinking, too. A lot has to happen between now and the award ceremony, but similarly to Murray, Joshua’s odds are only likely to fall between now and then.
