Medvedev sends Stan packing

Fifth seed Stan Wawrinka crashed out of Wimbledon at the first hurdle, as Daniil Medvedev earned a famous first-ever win at a Grand Slam.

Medvedev claimed a 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-1 victory over the three-time Grand Slam champion, as he enjoyed a perfect Wimbledon Centre Court debut. Wawrinka looked uncertain throughout much of the match and was unable to prevent a loss which continues his struggles at SW19 - with the Swiss never having gone further than the quarter-finals.

A joyous Medvedev told the BBC after a stunning triumph: "I have had a really great grasscourt season and I knew Stan had some problems at Queen's. I knew I would have a chance if I played well. Right now I don't even know what to say, I'm just very happy, my first win at a Grand Slam. Wimbledon is my favourite, it was in my juniors and still is."

Meanwhile, there were no such problems for Rafael Nadal, who showed few signs of his exertions during the claycourt season as he roared into the second round. Showing all of his customary power and precision, the Spaniard saw off Australian John Millman 6-1 6-3 6-2.

And Nadal, who was forced to miss Wimbledon last year due to injury, said after a comprehensive victory: "I have been playing good tennis since the beginning of the season. The clay-court season has been special and emotional and here I have an opportunity to perform on grass."

Nadal is 4/1 to win a third Wimbledon title, with defending champion Andy Murray priced at 5/1 and Novak Djokovic 5/1.

Also into round two is Aljaz Bedene, who won an epic encounter with Ivo Karlovic, taking the fifth set 8-6 thanks to the only break of serve in the match, with the first four sets all being decided in tie-breaks.
