Murray tipped for Melbourne return

Murray tipped for Melbourne return

Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley has backed Andy Murray to be fit and ready to compete in Melbourne early on in the New Year. Murray has been sidelined by a hip injury since losing to Sam Querrey in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in July, but Tiley have given an upbeat update about the prospects of the five-time Melbourne runner-up being back in action at the first Grand Slam of 2018.

He commented: "I can tell you that in talking to Andy, he has been training and he is preparing for having a great year in 2018. How much would this year have hurt him? To watch over the entire year Roger and Rafa share four Grand Slam titles - he would not have liked that. As competitive as Andy is, we know he's back and he'll want to improve his current ranking of number three in the world and get back to number one."

Murray can be backed at 7/2 to finally win the Australian Open in 2018, while he is 4/1 to claim a third Wimbledon title and 6/1 to triumph for a second time at the US Open.

Meanwhile, Tiley also expects Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka to feature in Melbourne, while he is confident that defending champion Serena Williams will be back on court following the birth of her first child.

He added: "Serena, the competitor that she is, she wants to win more than the 23 Grand Slam (singles) titles that she has. She wants to come back in 2018 and defend her title. Obviously, at training now, there is several months to go and it will be up to her as far as where she is with her fitness."
