May date for Bellew-Haye

May date for Bellew-Haye

Tony Bellew has vowed to rid boxing of David Haye when the pair meet in their rescheduled heavyweight bout at The O2 on 5th May.

The 35-year-old Liverpudlian was left frustrated when the pair's heavyweight rematch, which was due to take place on 17th December, had to be postponed last month when Haye suffered a bicep injury in what he described as a "freak accident down a stairwell".

However, following surgery to repair the damage, Haye has given the green light for a May showdown and Bellew is delighted that he will get the opportunity to inflict a second defeat on his rival after overcoming him in the 11th round of their first fight in March.

Haye suffered a serious Achilles injury mid-fight on that occasion so Bellew is relishing the chance to repeat his victory against a fully fit oppponent and force the former WBA champion into retirement.

Bellew said: "To be honest I was looking forward to a great victory in December and a relaxing family break over Christmas, but my mind is still very much on this fight and I will punish him for that. I now have a very clear plan for 2018 and that is to knock out David Haye, and then knock out Tyson 'Stavros Flatley' Fury and end both their careers. But first thing's first, I need to rid the sport of David Haye on 5th May and I look forward to doing this in what I believe will be an explosive fight."

In response, Haye acknowledged that he needs to overcome Bellew to remain in boxing and look for bigger fights against the likes of reigning world champion Anthony Joshua.

The 37-year-old said: "Tony has boasted that the rematch gives him the opportunity to force me into retirement. Unquestionably, I step into the ring on Saturday May 5, with both my career and legacy on the line."

Haye added: "Over the past five years, I've had a number of challenges to overcome, but learnt often during times of adversity we learn and grow. As a result, come May 5, Tony will be faced with a more experienced and more determined opponent. On Saturday 5th May, whether you are lucky enough to witness the showcase live, or tune in from home, you will not be disappointed. I will give fans the ending I have promised."

Bellew is 15/8 to win the heavyweight rematch, while Haye is available at 2/5.
