These are Football Games Where Every Point Matters

As the brief winter break looms in La Liga and football betting on Spain’s top flight takes a brief hiatus (other leagues are available!), the importance of football games leading up to the halfway stage increases.

Only six points separate the bottom five, while only eight points part the top five. There’s still much to play for despite Barca’s advantage.

WEEK 15 SATURDAY:

Alaves vs Las Palmas

England’s ‘six-pointer’ terminology is an apt description for this match. That both these sides won last weekend and remain in the drop zone – it was Las Palmas’ first win for two and a half months and a debut success for new Alaves boss Abelardo – speaks volumes for their general struggles to date. Another win may not be enough to lift either team out of the bottom three, but it would them half a chance.

Getafe vs Eibar

They are two of the top flight’s real unsung heroes. Both won last weekend and continue to climb the table. Can Getafe and match-winner Markel Bergara repeat their heroics after ending Valencia’s unbeaten record?

Real Madrid vs Sevilla

A fascinating contest between the sides placed fourth and fifth and tied on points. Sevilla’s European efforts in midweek may take their toll. One thing is certain: reigning champions Real can ill afford to drop more points with El Clasico little over a fortnight away.

WEEK 15 SUNDAY:

Deportivo La Coruna vs Leganes

Deportivo must have had a shock when both Las Palmas and Alaves won in their Week 14 matches. The gap has suddenly closed, and it’s not inconceivable for the Galicians to be in the relegation zone by next week. Seeing off Leganes, a side on the verge of a European spot after an impressive win over Villarreal, would certainly be a mighty boost for the club.

Valencia vs Celta Vigo

How Valencia must have been frustrated to go down to plucky 10-man Getafe after their wonderful unbeaten run. They remain second with five points off the pace, but Atletico are breathing down their necks. Hot on the heels of a 2-2 draw at Nou Camp that minimised the damage for Valencia, Vigo will hope to surprise another title contender.

Real Sociedad vs Malaga

How Malaga must have been deflated to finish the weekend bottom of the table. Their goalless draw with Levante was a match in which they targeted three points. If they can collect anything from ninth-placed Sociedad, who gave Atletico a scare last time out, it will be a bonus.

Real Betis vs Atletico Madrid

Going down to Las Palmas wasn’t part of the Betis script. Going out of the Champions League at the group stage wasn’t part of the Atletico script. How will both sides react? Diego Simeone’s side remain unbeaten in third place – could they be poised to launch a title bid of their own?

WEEK 15 MONDAY:

Levante vs Athletic Bilbao

Two sides on the fringes of safety. Levante continue to hold their own, Bilbao less so. Yet the Lehoiak will take heart from holding the champions to a goalless draw last weekend in the Basque country.

Villarreal vs Barcelona

The Yellow Submarine are in sixth and have a grip on the final European place. However, with seven sides all within three points of them, they will be keen to take something from the leaders. Despite being held at home, Barcelona extended their lead last weekend to five points. Villarreal have slipped out of the top five and want back in that privileged group. Will there be a point to prove?

WEEK 15 TUESDAY:

RCD Espanyol vs Girona

An archetypal mid-table clash will finish Week 15. Girona haven’t won for just over a month and need a pre-Christmas boost. Espanyol are proving hard to beat on their own turf.
