1st Test: New Zealand vs England

After a pulsating One Day series, New Zealand and England come face to face in a two-match Test contest, starting at Eden Park this week.

This will be a cracking game between two beautifully matched sides, as the betting odds show. The Black Caps are at 2.30 to win, with the tourists at 2.20 and the draw at 4.00. It sure is a tough call for sports betting fans, the ICC rankings separate the two sides by just a single point as fifth placed England aims to swap places.

And the Three Lions certainly have the firepower. Ben Stokes is back in the fold and he can be the most destructive hitter in world cricket on his day. As can his good friend Jonny Bairstow. Lancashire’s Liam Livingstone, another batsman with a spectacular array of shots has been called up. But the most prolific run-getter of the lot is skipper Joe Root, who arrives on the back of a century in the tour match at Hamilton.

Root’s opposite number, Kane Williamson, joins him in the ICC top five list of batsmen, so this is an eagerly awaited contest on both sides. Williamson will hope his most explosive batter Ross Taylor has recovered from a thigh strain, but he has one-day specialist Martin Guptill to call on if needed and he arrives having scored 73 against England in the warm-up.

But the Kiwis will need to watch out for England paceman Stuart Broad, who’s on 399 wickets. The fiery Notts seamer will smell blood; and he’s the man for the big occasion.
