Marco Reus: In sight of the crowning glory at Borussia Dortmund his talent has long deserved

Marco Reus: In sight of the crowning glory at Borussia Dortmund his talent has long deserved

Nine points ahead of Bayern in the Bundesliga, Dortmund's captain and star player can begin to dream.

“REUS: better than all of Schalke,” was Bild’s headline on Thursday.

The tabloid mischievously claimed that Borussia Dortmund’s captain has been more effective in front of goal than all of Saturday’s Revierderby opponents put together this season, having had a hand in 15 goals - one more than the decidedly lacklustre Royal Blues, marooned in 12th place, have mustered so far.

The maths might not be quite right - according to Kicker, he has nine goals and in fact seven assists  - and the argument spurious  - where are Schalke’s assists in all of this? - but the basic point holds true: Domenico Tedesco’s team don’t have anyone who can even remotely compete with the brilliance of the Germany international.

Reus, 29, is on course for his most prolific campaign since he burst on the scene as “Rolls-Reus” with Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2011/12, when, coincidentally, a certain Lucien Favre was in charge of the Foals. The Swiss manager has a long history of bringing out the best of attacking players, by giving them detailed instructions on technical matters and runs.

But that alone can’t quite explain why Reus has at last returned to the sort of performance levels that saw him followed by the clubs in the world and rated as the most gifted forward of his generation, despite plenty of competition by the likes of Mario Götze and Thomas Müller.

Three additional factors have been crucial for his renaissance. Firstly, he’s been injury-free, able to play in every single Bundesliga game since the start of the season. It’s been five years since Reus, a player cursed with bad luck, had a similar run of games in the first half of the season.

There’s a renewed confidence in his own body, which translates into a kind of swagger and a readiness to make the kind of short-burst, darting runs that make all the difference in the final third. Secondly, he has visibly grown in stature, having been appointed captain by Favre in August.

Young players such as the mercurial Englishman Jadon Sancho look to him for advice. He has relished the added responsibility, and it’s almost as if he’s become extra-determined to act as a role model when it comes to being effective in front of goal. Reus’ decision-making has vastly improved in the current campaign.

Lastly, there’s a calmness and a maturity that had perhaps been missing in previous years. When Reus extended his contract until 2023 in March of this year, citing “deepest conviction” and devotion to the Black and Yellow cause, he drew a final line under all transfer talk.

Reus has become the club’s most important figure head since the departure of Jürgen Klopp, a locally-born player in touch with public sentiment and the emotional needs of the supporters. Their love and admiration have given him an extra boost that has translated into goals.

In Sancho, Jakob Bruun Larsen, Paco Alcacer and midfield maestro Axel Witsel, Dortmund have so many well-performing members of the squad right now, that Reus’ amazing form has been overlooked somewhat but for there can be little doubt that he’s best player in the league right now, and heading for a career-high.

Winning his first ever Bundesliga trophy, as captain no less, would be the crowning achievement his talent has long deserved.
