New York dream over for Djokovic

New York dream over for Djokovic

Novak Djokovic's hopes of winning a fourth US Open title have evaporated after he was forced to retire in his fourth-round encounter with Stan Wawrinka.

The Serb was down 6-4 7-5 2-0 to Wawrinka and staring defeat in the face when he decided to retire injured on Sunday.

Djokovic had been nursing a shoulder injury throughout the Grand Slam event at Flushing Meadows and admitted after the match that the pain was too much to continue.

"It is very frustrating. Of course it hurts that I had to retire," said the 32-year-old.

"Some days the pain has been higher, some days with less intensity. Obviously I was taking different stuff to kill the pain instantly. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

"You just know when you know, when you feel like you're not able to hit the shot anymore."

Meanwhile the 34-year-old Wawrinka will go on to play the Russian fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals in New York.

Wawrinka is 4/5 to win and 1/1 to lose to Medvedev.

Djokovic is 13/8 to bounce back and win the first Grand Slam event of 2020 at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
