Rahm eyeing Race to Dubai lead

Rahm eyeing Race to Dubai lead

Jon Rahm will be part of a strong home presence at this week's Open de Espana, but he has more on his mind than a successful defence - he also wants top spot in the Race to Dubai.

The 24-year-old won on his tournament debut at Centro Nacional de Golf last April and will look to make it back-to-back wins at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, but that long-term aim is also on his mind in the capital, because victory would see him usurp Shane Lowry as the rankings leader.

"Obviously I want to win the Race to Dubai," he said last week at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. "Hopefully, I can put myself in a good position to have a chance in Dubai.

"If I can be on top instead of Shane at the end of the year I'd be really happy about that. It would be a good finish to a good, consistent year.

"I had a good chance to win Wentworth and hopefully I can keep it going. To win in Spain would be really special, or Dubai - obviously I'll take Dubai, as well."

Rahm missed the cut last week in St Andrews, but in his other four starts on the regular European Tour this season he has won the Irish Open, been second in the Andalucia Masters and BMW PGA Championship, as well as 11th in the Open.

"I've been really consistent this year," he said. "I think statistically speaking, the big difference is that I'm hitting it straighter off the tee.

"I've also been really good at putting inside six feet, not just making more birdies, but saving a lot of pars. If you can make just one more putt inside that distance each round from that distance, that's four shots for the week."

Rahm will be joined in the field by fellow Spaniards Sergio Garcia, Rafa Cabrera Bello, Adri Arnaus, Pablo Larrazabal and Jorge Campillo.

Rahm is 3/1 to win the tournament outright, Garcia is 6/1, Cabrera Bello 10/1 and Campillo 50/1.
