O'Neill puts pressure on Dutch

O'Neill puts pressure on Dutch

Northern Ireland coach Michael O'Neill is hoping that the weight of expectation will hinder the Netherlands when the two sides meet in Rotterdam on Thursday evening.

Having won four of five played so far in Group C, the Irish have made themselves a real threat to both the Dutch and Germany in the race to qualify for the European Championship finals next year.

However, O'Neill is well aware of the improvements the Oranje have made in recent times, having fail to qualify for the 2016 Euros and the 2018 World Cup.

He told Sky Sports News: "We know their strengths and weaknesses very well.

"It is a team that is on the rise, but it is a team with a certain level of expectation because the Netherlands have not qualified for the last two tournaments.

"This is a team that has the burden of trying to break that cycle. Equally, it is probably not the most experienced international team - they maybe don't yet have that level of experience of previous Dutch sides.

"They are an excellent team and I definitely think they are going to grow."

The Dutch have won three out of the four qualifiers they have played to date, including a 4-2 success in Germany just over a month ago, while the last time they faced Northern Ireland they romped to a 6-0 victory in a friendly in June 2012.

The Netherlands are 2/11 to win the game on Thursday, with the draw priced at 7/1 and a 1-1 final scoreline available at 14/1.
