Zverev left looking for answers

Zverev left looking for answers

Alexander Zverev accepts he has some serious thinking to do before he starts to prepare for the upcoming Australian Open in Melbourne.

The German was totally out of sorts as he represented Germany at the inaugural ATP Cup in Brisbane, losing all three singles matches he played.

His first defeat was a three-setter against Australian Alex de Minaur, before he lost out in two straight sets to both Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece and Canadian Denis Shapovalov.

Zverev now has only a few weeks to try and rediscover his mojo for the first Grand Slam of 2020, with the German still having yet to progress past the quarter-final stage of any of the four majors.

The 2018 ATP Finals champion told reporters: "I'm not playing good, so there's a lot of things that I still need to improve, but it's the start of the season.

"Usually at the Hopman Cup when I played I always played bad as well, but this is unfortunate, this is a more competitive event, I think.

"The first match I actually thought I played okay, the serving was horrible, but then I played two very bad matches, but what can I do."

Twelve months ago Zverev reached round four at the Australian Open, before being beaten 6-1 6-1 7-6 by Milos Raonic.

Zverev is priced at 18/1 to take the title in Melbourne, with 2019 semi-finalist Tsitsipas available at 10/1 and US Open finalist Daniil Medvedev 10/1.
