Bundesliga Roundup: Title Chasers Take Care of Business

Bundesliga Roundup: Title Chasers Take Care of Business

The Bundesliga title race continues to be a tight one. There was no change at the top, but while the top four title contenders all dropped points last time out — the top two of Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig played out a closely contested draw — they all recorded convincing wins this weekend to hold their ground.

RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund both had dominant home victories, while Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach were impressive in big away wins.

Here’s a quick breakdown of all the high-scoring action involving the Bundesliga’s big guns over the weekend.

Bayern Munich blitz Koln in 4-1 win

Bayern Munich needed all of 12 minutes to secure all three points away to Koln. A fine Thomas Muller pass released Robert Lewandowski, who struck with his league-leading 23rd league goal of the season after just three minutes to get the Bavarians going.

And just two minutes later, Kingsley Coman — who made his first start since returning from a two-month injury layoff — doubled their lead. Muller again provided the assist as the Frenchman produced a fine finish from around the penalty spot.

The game was basically over at that point, but Serge Gnabry made sure of it on 12 minutes as he got Bayern’s third. The German did well to create space for himself off a corner as he found the bottom corner with a pinpoint strike.

Gnabry should’ve had a second on the half-hour mark as he rounded Koln keeper Timo Horn and had an open goal to aim at. However, he conspired to hit the crossbar. But Gnabry did eventually get his brace on 66 minutes with a beautiful curling effort that gave Horn no chance.

Koln did get their consolation goal four minutes later as Mark Uth tapped in from close range after a well-worked attacking move.

But aside from that one lapse, it was another impressive performance from Bayern, who continue to show just why the Bundesliga 2020 odds have them as favourites once again to win the title.

Haaland strikes again as Dortmund destroy Frankfurt

Eintracht Frankfurt came into their match against Dortmund on the back of some impressive Bundesliga 2020 results. They picked up back-to-back victories over RB Leipzig and thrashed Augsburg 5-0 last weekend. However, they were simply no match for Dortmund, who hit them for four goals at Signal Iduna Park.

Reigning Bundesliga Player of the Month Erling Braut Haaland once again got on the scoresheet to help Dortmund bounce back from a 4-3 defeat at Leverkusen. Haaland has improved his incredible scoring record at Dortmund to nine goals in just 349 minutes.

Fellow teenage hotshot Jadon Sancho also continued his blistering run of form with a goal. The young English star now has 13 goals and 13 assists this season.

Dortmund are in action this midweek as they host Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League round of 16 first leg. They will be without captain Marco Reus for the first leg, and the SBOBET odds have them as slight 2.84 underdogs at home. But with Haaland and Sancho in such amazing form, they still stand a decent chance of grabbing an early advantage.

Leipzig pick up routine win at struggling Bremen

After a couple of disappointing performances against Frankfurt and Gladbach, RB Leipzig appear to be right back on track. They followed up their decent draw against Bayern with a 3-0 victory over relegation-threatened Werder Bremen.

Lukas Klostermann gave the Red Bulls the lead after 17 minutes. The centre-back was at the right place at the right time to tap home from point-blank range after a well-worked free-kick.

Leipzig doubled their lead six minutes before the break through Patrik Schick. The towering Czech striker rose high to head home from a corner.

And the Red Bulls secured the points just a minute after half-time. Wing-back Nordi Mukiele got on the end of a long pass from Konrad Laimer and produced a fine finish to score his third goal of the season.

All in all, it was a promising showing from Leipzig, which should give them confidence ahead of their huge round of 16 first-leg matchup against Tottenham in the Champions League in midweek.

Gladbach fire four past Fortuna Dusseldorf

Borussia Monchengladbach are still very much in the title race. Despite missing suspended top scorer Alassane Plea, Gladbach still scored four goals in a 4-1 away win at Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Lars Stindl bagged a second-half brace to break the 1-1 tie and Florian Neuhaus added a fourth to secure the points.

Gladbach are currently in fourth, tied with Dortmund on 42 points. However, they still have a game in hand and could go into a tie with second-place Leipzig if they win.
