Medvedev feels he has semi-final edge

Daniil Medvedev believes his experience of playing in a US Open semi-final gives him the upper hand over opponent Dominic Thiem.

The Russian is seeking his first Grand Slam title as he goes into battle against Thiem in Friday’s men's singles semi-final.

Medvedev reached the final at Flushing Meadows last year, before eventually losing a five-set thriller against Rafael Nadal.

The 24-year-old is upbeat about his chances of reaching another final, especially as Thiem has never been this far in the New York eventwith the Austrian's previous best being a quarter-final appearance in 2018.

Medvedev is currently two places below Thiem in the world rankings, but he feels last year's run to the final could give him the edge.

The world number five stated: "Dominic is a tough opponent to play, especially of course on clay. On hard I think it's a little bit easier.

"When I say 'easier' he just made the final of Australian Open. For me it will be easier for me to play him on hard courts than clay courts. The fact that I was already one time in US Open semi-final helps a lot.

It is Thiem that has the advantage in the head-to-head stats, with a 2-1 record in their three previous meetings. Medvedev did win their last encounter, though, a 6-3 6-1 victory at the ATP Masters 1000 Canada event last year.

The Russian ace is 4/5 to win Friday's semi-final, while Thiem can be backed at 5/6.
