Evans in Brit battle Down Under

Evans in Brit battle Down Under

Dan Evans will lock horns with Cameron Norrie in a Battle of the Brits in the opening round of the Australian Open.

British number one Evans, who is in semi-final action at the Murray River Open on Saturday, will take on Norrie for the first time since their meeting at a Challenger event in California five years ago.

A third-round meeting with world number two Rafael Nadal, who faces Laslo Djere in his opener, could be lying in wait.

Also in the men's draw, Serbia's world number one Novak Djokovic kicks off his pursuit for a record-extending ninth Australian Open title against Jeremy Chardy.

Djokovic is housed in the same half of the draw as US Open champion Dominic Thiem, who he beat in last year's Melbourne final, and the Austrian opens up against Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin.

In the women's draw, 23-time Grand Slam heroine Serena Williams meets Laura Siegemund and she may duel with Naomi Osaka, whose title tilt begins against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, in the semi-finals.

World number one Ashleigh Barty will play her first Grand Slam match in a year against Danka Kovinic, while defending champion Sofia Kenin meets Australian wildcard Maddison Inglis.

It is also a welcomed return to top-level tennis for Bianca Andreescu, who is set for her first tournament appearance since October 2019 against Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu.

The Canadian eighth seed, the 2019 US Open champion, withdrew from the warm-up tournaments but is delighted to be back.

Andreescu said: "Right now I had a long period where I can focus on those things and train to the best of my capabilities. I don't always want to focus on the past. I want to focus on the future now.

"At this point I'm just super grateful to be back, healthy. And I'm really looking forward to it."

Djokovic is 5/4 for the men's Australian Open, with Nadal at 5/1 and Thiem at 5/1.

Osaka is 11/2 in the women's event, with home heroine Barty 7/1 and Williams 8/1.
