Harrington makes tough Rose call

Harrington makes tough Rose call

Europe Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington has admitted it was an "incredibly difficult" decision to leave Justin Rose out of his side, with Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter and Shane Lowry confirmed as his picks.

Team Europe are priced at 2/1 to win outright this year's Ryder Cup match against the United States at Whistling Straits, but they must do so without one of their most experienced players in Rose, with the Europeans 6/4 to retain the trophy.

Rose finished in a tie for sixth at the BMW PGA Championship on Sunday following a final round 65, and he had hoped that would be enough to force his way into Harrington's plans.

However, he ended up being in a four-way battle with Garcia, Poulter and Lowry for the final three places on the team, after Bernd Wiesberger and Lee Westwood secured the final two automatic qualifying berths at Wentworth.

Harrington confirmed that made his decision especially tough, but it was ultimately Rose who missed out on a sixth apperance in the competition.

Harrington on Rose call

"It was incredibly difficult with JR," said Harrington. "Clearly he was in contention in his last two events.

"Did I need more? Maybe not, but the fact of the matter is, with who he was going up against, the consistency of Shane Lowry, the heart of the team has been Ian and Sergio over the years, somebody had to lose out.

"It really is as close as that. If you don't play your way in it's a tough place to be. It easily could have been JR or Alex Noren."

Europe line-up complete

Garcia, Poulter and Lowry join Wiesberger, Westwood, Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Paul Casey, Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland on Harrington's team.

Europe are the current holders of the Ryder Cup having triumphed 17.5-10.5 at Le Golf National in 2018, with this year's competition set to take place in Wisconsin between September 24th-26th.
