Some of the world’s top men’s and women’s tennis stars will continue their preparations for the US Open at next week’s Canadian Open. The National Bank Open presented by Rogers is the official name for this Masters 1000 event, which offers the chance for the big names to battle it out on the hard courts in Montreal and Toronto.

This year will be the 132nd edition of this famous tournament, which has seen the likes of Roger Federer, Andre Agassi, Ivan Lendl, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, and Serena Williams crowned as previous winners.

ATP Canadian Open field

Daniil Medvedev is the defending champion in the Men’s Singles event and the current world number one will be back to defend his title in Montreal. The Russian beat America’s Reilly Opelka 6-4 6-3 in the 2021 final to lift the trophy and seal what was the 12th ATP title of his career, although he has won just one tournament since.

Medvedev will face a stern test to retain the title, with a very strong field (at least seven of the world’s top 10 are likely to feature) set to take to the court from August 5. Among the field is eighth-seed and Montreal-native Felix Auger-Aliassime who will come into the tournament off the back of the Los Cabos Open in Mexico.

Rafael Nadal, a five-time Canadian Open winner, could also feature despite fitness concerns following an abdominal injury he suffered at this year’s Wimbledon. Nadal has won two of the last three Canadian Opens and he defeated the defending champion Medvedev in the Australian Open final earlier in the year. The 22-time Grand Slam winner has also won three hard court titles this year. 

SW19 champion Novak Djokovic has expressed his intentions to be in Montreal too, as he looks to claim a fifth title in Canada with his last success at this tournament coming back in 2016. However, the Canadian government has explicitly stated that he must receive a Covid-19 vaccine if he wishes to enter the country.

The only other previous winner who could feature is Alexander Zverev, with the German continuing his recovery from ankle surgery, though it remains unclear whether he will be fit to take his place. Third-seed Carlos Alcaraz shouldn't be overlooked - the Spanish star has already claimed titles this year in Miami and Madrid.

WTA Canadian Open field

Italy’s Camila Giorgi is the defending women’s Canadian Open champion, with the WTA event taking place in Toronto. The 30-year-old ranked as high as world number 26 back in 2018 but has been steadily rising back up the standings after a lean couple of years. Having failed to get past the fourth round in any of the three Grand Slams to date in 2022, Giorgi will hope a return to Canada sees her recapture her best form.

The big draw for the fans will be the appearance of 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, who is building up her preparation for Flushing Meadows later this month. Williams’ last win in Canada came in 2013, when she took the title for a third time with a straight-sets victory over Romania’s Sorana Cirstea.

Former world number one Venus Williams will also be in Toronto. The 7-time singles and 14-time doubles Grand Slam champion lost to Canadian Rebecca Marino in the opening round of the Citi Open this month. Marino has recieved a wild card entry for the 2022 Canadian Open.

Fellow American Coco Gauff, currently ranked 11 in the world, is also set to take her place in the field having lost in the quarter-finals to eventual winner Giorgi last year. Britain’s Emma Raducanu will be heading back to the country of her birth for this tournament, with the 2021 US Open champion born in Toronto in 2002. She enters the tournament off the back of losing her doubles debut at the Citi Open.
